I want to go to a single Mikuni for my 1973 850 Norton Commando. Is the 34 mm one the best in general? Does the kit have alternative jets? Can I get a suitable throttle cable for my quick throttle/twist grip? Thanks in advance. I think this will be a good modification.

In general we feel the 34mm kit is better for the majority of riders, and bikes. The 36mm will have more top end power potential, but will lack some of the throttle response of the 34 kit. Our cable may work fine with your throttle assembly, but there are quite a few out there floating around, so it will be hard to tell without specifics.

I have a MAP mikuni conversion on my 73 850 commando that is from the 1990 era. I need to replace the rubber carb holder. The carb says T 0 Y 1 on the left intake area and that's the only ID I can find with carb on bike. Can you tell me what size carb this is so I can obtain the correct holder? Thanks John.

Hello John,

Don’t know what that number means. Around the enrichener boss should be something like VMXX-. Most likely you have a VM34 as we sold the most of those back in the day.

If you need a new rubber flange to spigot adapter the part number for a 34mm carb is M-VM34-200K. Easy way to check is the bolt spacing on the MAP manifold should be 60mm C-C. if it is 70mm then you have a 36-38mm carb (manifold number M-VM36-200K)

I have a Commando that has one your 34mm Mikuni kits on it. It came in a box so I don't have the settings for the air and idle screws.
Can you give ballpark settings for the air and idle screws

Typically, you want to start with 1-3/4 to 2 turns out on the air/fuel mixture screw. Do this before starting the bike. You will need to fine tune the mixture screw after the initial start.
The idle can be set once the bike is started. Do this by turning the idle screw clockwise until you're getting about 850-1100 RPMs, or wherever you prefer your idle to be. If you're looking for a prestart setting, try screwing in the idle screw until you see the throttle slide just begin to lift a bit. That will usually keep the bike idling on initial start.

The 34mm is an excellent choice for the stock Norton Commando 850. With the single, 34mm carb, you'll notice a boost in low and mid-range performance. You'll also have quicker starts and easier maintenance (no more syncing carbs!).
The 36mm carb is a better choice if you have a performance cam, a more open flow exhaust and ride mostly at highway speeds.
The 38mm carb is exclusively for full race bikes with racing cams, enlarged valves, head work and open exhaust.

I have a single carb kit on my commando already (34). But its old, about 35 years old. Would you recommend replacing the carb? Do they wear out?

Unlike its pot-metal Amal brethren, the Mikuni is well built with excellent materials. Years will not generally affect it but ethanol fuels will take a rapid toll regardless of age as well as with anything mechanical will eventually wear out. Check the chrome on the slide – worn threw get a new one!

Individual Mikuni carbs are sold as they come from the factory. If you are happy with your getting supply same for a quote.

If your Commando has a stock engine, I'd recommend the 34mm Mikuni. This kit will come jetted for a stock bike at sea level. We also include a small assortment of extra jetting to dial the carb in if needed. The 36mm kit would be best for bikes with a big bore kit, street performance cam and a less restrictive exhaust.The 36mm kit is exclusively for full race bikes with a racing cam, enlarged valves, head work and a open flow exhaust.

If your Commando 750 is mostly stock with the exception of a two-into-one exhaust, the best carb choice for you is the 34mm kit.
If you have a performance cam, larger valves along with porting and polishing, then the 36mm kit would be a better choice.
The 38mm kit is for race-prepared 850s.
You'll find with the single, 34mm carb, you'll notice a nice boost in low and mid-range performance. You'll also have quicker starts and easier maintenance over stock Amal carbs.
