How do I test a capacitor ?

These instructions are for testing our MAP4109 capacitor. Other capacitors will be different.
Our capacitor has two poles. One is identified by a positive (+) sign. The other pole is negative. Using a known, good battery (charged with 12-plus volts), run current to the capacitor using jumpers from the positive side of the battery to the positive side of the capacitor and from the negative side of the battery to the negative side of the capacitor. Take care not to cross the jumpers.
The capacitor should charge immediately after the poles are secured. Remove the two jumpers from the battery, again taking care not to touch the jumpers to each other. After about 5 minutes, use a volt meter (or a multimeter set on "DC Volts") to measure the voltage across the poles of the capacitor. You should have approximately the same voltage as the battery you are charging the capacitor with. If the voltage has dropped, replace the capacitor.
